Storm Damage Repair & Insurance Documentation Support

→ From hail bruising to wind uplift, we document damage with photos and help you understand repair vs. replacement. Emergency tarping available.

While your claim is in progress, our roof repair team can handle urgent leaks — and when hail has taken the whole roof, we’ll walk you through a complete roof replacement. Not sure how serious the hail was? See the National Weather Service severe thunderstorm safety guide.

We provide this service across McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville, Edinburg, Weslaco and Mission.

Hail Damage or Wind Damage?

Storms in the Rio Grande Valley damage roofs in two different ways, and the repair is not the same.

Hail strikes the roof surface directly. It bruises or fractures shingle mats, knocks granules loose, and dents soft metal such as vents, flashing and gutters. The damage is often spread across the slopes facing the direction the hail fell, and much of it is difficult to see from the ground.

Wind works at the edges. It lifts and creases shingles, breaks the adhesive seal holding courses down, tears shingles off entirely, and pulls at ridge caps, drip edge and flashing. Wind damage tends to concentrate along roof edges, ridges and corners rather than across a whole slope.

A single storm often causes both. A roof can lose shingles to wind while the remaining surface is bruised by hail, which is why an inspection looks at the whole roof system rather than only the obvious missing pieces.

Storm damage

Common Signs of Storm Damage

  • Shingles missing, lifted, curled or creased
  • Granules collecting in gutters, downspouts or at splash blocks
  • Dark or worn patches where the shingle surface has been stripped
  • Dents in vents, flashing, gutters or metal roof panels
  • Bent or displaced ridge caps
  • Flashing pulled away from walls, chimneys or penetrations
  • Water staining on ceilings or in the attic after rain
  • Daylight visible through the roof deck from inside the attic
  • Impact marks or fallen limbs resting on the roof

A roof can look fine from the driveway and still have storm damage that matters.

Hail bruising often does not break the shingle surface immediately, so the mat underneath can be fractured while the top still looks intact. Broken adhesive seals leave shingles lying flat and normal-looking until the next wind lifts them. Damage to flashing, boots and penetrations sits where it cannot be seen from below. And damage on the far slope of a roof is simply out of sight.

This is the practical reason to have a roof looked at properly after a significant storm rather than relying on whether anything looks wrong from outside. A professional inspection is how hidden damage is identified; it is not something a homeowner can rule out from the ground.

A sensible order, with safety first:

  • Stay off the roof. Storm-damaged roofs are unstable, and walking on hail-bruised shingles causes further damage.
  • Deal with active water first. Move belongings, catch drips, and photograph interior damage before cleaning up.
  • Photograph what you can safely reach from the ground, including debris, dented gutters, fallen limbs and interior staining, with dates.
  • Have the roof inspected and documented by a roofing contractor.
  • Contact your insurance company about coverage, your deductible, and what your policy requires of you.
  • Keep every document including inspection findings, photographs, estimates and receipts for emergency measures.

Coverage depends on your policy and insurer. Confirm coverage, deductible and claim requirements with your insurance company.

Ariston construction

The Ariston Roof Inspection

Ariston inspects the roof as a system and documents what is found:

  • Roof surface slope by slope, including slopes not visible from the ground
  • Shingle or panel condition, covering bruising, fracturing, granule loss, creasing, missing material and seal failure
  • Metal components including vents, flashing, drip edge, ridge caps and gutters
  • Penetrations such as pipe boots, chimneys, skylights and HVAC curbs
  • Attic and interior checks for staining, decking condition, daylight intrusion and insulation moisture
  • Measurements covering slope dimensions, pitch, layer count and material type
  • Written findings supported by photographs

Photo and Damage Documentation

Storm damage is a time-sensitive condition, and the roof eventually gets repaired. What survives is the record.

Ariston documents inspections with dated photographs tied to roof locations: overviews showing each slope, close-ups of specific damage, images of metal components and penetrations, measurement documentation, and interior photographs where water has entered. The result is a record of what the damage was, where it was, and when it was observed.

Estimating

Detailed Xactimate Roofing Estimates

Ariston prepares roofing estimates in Xactimate, a line-item estimating platform widely used across the property repair industry.

An Xactimate estimate from Ariston brings together:

  • Roof measurements including slope dimensions, pitch, total squares and layer count
  • Photographs of documented damage
  • Documented damage by location and type
  • Material and labor scope, covering what is removed and what is installed
  • Line-item pricing, with each component priced as a separate line

The value is specificity. Rather than a single lump figure, the estimate shows the individual components of the work so the scope can be reviewed line by line.

What Ariston does not do. Ariston is a roofing contractor, not an insurance adjuster or public adjuster. Ariston does not determine what your policy covers, does not interpret your insurance contract, does not negotiate claims on your behalf, and cannot guarantee that a claim will be approved or that an insurer will pay any particular amount. Those decisions rest with you and your insurance company.

Your options

Repair or Replace?

Not every storm-damaged roof needs replacing.

Repair generally suits damage that is localized and confined to a defined area, such as a limited number of missing shingles, a damaged flashing detail or a failed pipe boot, on a roof whose remaining surface and decking are sound and whose material is still serviceable.

Replacement becomes the realistic option when damage is spread across multiple slopes, when hail bruising has compromised the shingle mat broadly, when the roof was already near the end of its service life, when decking is deteriorated over a wide area, or when the existing material can no longer be matched.

The inspection and the measurements are what make this a judgment based on the roof condition rather than a guess. Ariston documents the findings and explains which option the condition supports and why. See also Roof Repair.

Materials

Owens Corning Shingle Options

Ariston installs Owens Corning roofing products.

For storm-damaged roofs being replaced, asphalt shingles remain the most common choice in the Rio Grande Valley, being familiar, widely available and straightforward to match and repair.

Where storm resilience is the priority, impact-rated shingles are worth understanding. These carry a Class 4 impact rating under UL 2218, the standard that classifies shingles by their resistance to impact from a steel ball dropped under controlled test conditions. Class 4 is the highest of the four classes. Read more about shingle roofing and impact-rated shingles.

Some homeowners replacing a storm-damaged roof move to metal rather than re-shingling. Metal panels have no granules to lose and no adhesive seal to break, and standing seam systems conceal their fasteners beneath the seam.

Ariston installs standing seam, R-Panel and stone-coated metal roofing. Read more about metal roofing and standing seam metal roofing.

Cost follows the roof and the scope, which is why a measured inspection comes before any figure.

The main drivers are roof size measured in squares, pitch and complexity, since steeper and more cut-up roofs take longer and are harder to work safely, the number of existing layers to remove, decking condition once exposed, material choice, the metal and detail work involved across flashing, vents, ridge, drip edge and penetrations, and disposal. A line-item Xactimate estimate presents these as separate priced components rather than a single total.

Emergency & FAQ

Emergency Roof Repair and Tarping

When a roof is open and water is coming in, stopping the water comes first.

Emergency measures are temporary and protective: tarping exposed sections, sealing or covering breaches, and clearing immediate hazards to limit further water damage while a permanent repair is scoped. They are not a substitute for the repair, they buy the time to do it properly. Full detail on emergency roof repair.

Usually you cannot tell from the ground, and that is what catches people out. Hail bruises a shingle rather than removing it — it fractures the mat underneath while the surface still looks intact. Those bruises shed granules over the following months, and the leak often arrives a year or more after the storm that caused it. Look for granules collecting in gutters and at downspout outlets, dents on soft metal like vents and flashing, and a roof that simply looks flatter or more worn than it did last season.

Completely. Wind works at the edges — lifting tabs, breaking the seal strip and tearing flashing, so water gets underneath at the perimeter and around penetrations. Hail works on the field of the roof, bruising the surface everywhere it lands. A roof can have serious hail damage with not a single shingle out of place, which is exactly why insurers want it documented properly rather than described over the phone.

Claim windows vary by insurer and policy, and they are shorter than most homeowners expect. The practical risk is that hail damage stays invisible until it leaks, by which point the window may have closed and the insurer can argue the damage came from wear rather than the storm. If the Valley has taken hail, getting a free inspection and written assessment on record early protects your position even if you do not file straight away.

After a significant hail event, yes. It costs nothing, it takes under an hour, and it produces photographs and a written scope dated close to the storm. That documentation is the difference between an insurer paying for a roof and you paying for it two years later.

Yes. Hail can fracture the shingle mat or strip granules while the surface still looks intact and the roof still keeps water out for a time. Damage of this kind is usually identified by inspection rather than by a leak appearing.

Ariston provides written inspection findings, dated photographs tied to roof locations, roof measurements, and a detailed line-item Xactimate estimate of the work. What your insurer requires for a claim is determined by your insurer.

Xactimate is a line-item estimating platform widely used across the property repair industry. An Xactimate roof estimate lists each component of the work, such as tear-off, underlayment, shingles or panels, flashing, vents, ridge, disposal and labor, as a separate priced line with measurements and scope attached.

Many Texas homeowners policies address hail and wind damage, often under the same wind and hail provisions, but terms vary. Some policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible, and some limit how roof payment is calculated. Coverage depends on your policy and insurer. Confirm coverage, deductible and claim requirements with your insurance company. General consumer guidance on residential property insurance in Texas is published by the Texas Department of Insurance.

Actual cash value, or ACV, is in general terms replacement cost less depreciation. Replacement cost coverage addresses, in general terms, the cost to replace damaged property without a deduction for depreciation, often subject to conditions. Which basis applies is stated in your policy. Coverage depends on your policy and insurer. Confirm coverage, deductible and claim requirements with your insurance company.

Many Texas policies apply a separate deductible to wind and hail losses, sometimes calculated as a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount. Your deductible is stated in your policy. Coverage depends on your policy and insurer. Confirm coverage, deductible and claim requirements with your insurance company.

Damage sometimes becomes apparent only once work begins, for example deteriorated decking found after tear-off. Ariston documents newly discovered conditions with photographs and provides an updated line-item scope. Whether additional findings affect a claim is determined by your insurer.
