→ Standing seam is a system, not a product. The panels are the least interesting part of it. What decides how it performs over its life is how the panels are attached, how they are allowed to move, and how the edges and penetrations are detailed. Two roofs using identical panels can perform completely differently.
The failures we get called out to on existing metal roofs are almost never the panels themselves. They are clips that pinned a panel that needed to float, flashing at a pipe or a wall that was sealed instead of formed, and expansion that nobody accounted for in a climate that swings forty degrees in a day.

Concealed fasteners — and why that matters
On an exposed-fastener roof, screws go through the face of the panel and seal against a rubber washer. Those washers are a service item — heat and UV harden them over time and thermal movement can work fasteners loose — so an exposed-fastener roof generally needs periodic checking that a concealed-fastener roof does not. Standing seam fixes panels with clips hidden under the seam. Nothing holding the roof down is exposed to weather or UV.
Snap-lock or mechanically seamed?
Snap-lock panels click together and are quicker to install. Mechanically seamed panels are folded closed on site with a seaming machine, once or twice, producing a tighter joint. Mechanically seamed systems are generally the ones approved for lower slopes and for buildings where wind performance matters most. Which one is right is a function of your roof, not a matter of preference.
Clips, and why panels have to move
Metal expands and contracts. A long panel in Valley heat moves measurably between a July afternoon and a January night, and that movement has to go somewhere. Floating clips let the panel slide; fixed clips hold it at one point so it expands predictably in one direction. Get this wrong and the roof tells you — oil canning that worsens, seams that open, fasteners backing out of the deck.
Heat, wind and hail in South Texas
Heat. Sustained high roof-surface temperatures mean panels move nearly every day of the year. Panel length, clip type and the detail at ridge and eave all have to be chosen together. A short, simple roof forgives a lot; long runs on a commercial building forgive very little.
Wind. Metal roofs rarely fail in the middle of the field — they fail at rake, eave, ridge and the corners where uplift concentrates. Panel systems are tested for uplift under standards such as UL 580 and ASTM E1592, and the tested assembly includes the clips, the fastener pattern and the deck, not just the panel. If someone quotes you a wind number, ask which tested assembly it applies to and whether your roof actually matches it.
Hail. Asphalt shingles can bruise, and that damage may not show as a leak until much later. Metal panels more often dent than puncture — though whether a given impact does cosmetic or functional damage depends on the panel profile, gauge and substrate, the size and angle of the stone, and what sits underneath. Where the damage is cosmetic and the roof still keeps water out, that is better performance, but it can make for a harder insurance conversation.
Salt air — and when it actually applies to you
This gets overstated. Most of the Valley is not a marine environment, and specifying an expensive coastal system for a roof in Edinburg is selling you something you do not need. But it matters closer to the water. Industry guidance is consistent that steel-based products including Galvalume are generally not warranted very close to a shoreline — commonly cited as roughly 1,000 to 1,500 feet, though the exact exclusion is set by the manufacturer’s own warranty — and that aluminum performs better in genuine salt-air exposure because it forms a protective oxide layer rather than rusting. The realistic failure point on steel near salt is the cut edge, where the coating stops. If your building is on the Laguna Madre side, near Port Isabel, or exposed to onshore wind off open water, this is a real specification decision and we will tell you so. If you are in McAllen, it usually is not.
Choosing the specification: substrate, gauge, finish and slope
Substrate. Steel — usually Galvalume-coated — is the default and the better value for most Valley buildings. Aluminum costs more and is softer, so it dents more readily, but it does not rust and is the sensible choice in genuine coastal exposure.
Gauge. Thinner steel costs less and tends to show oil canning more readily. Heavier gauge generally sits flatter and stands up better to denting and handling damage, and costs more. How much difference it makes depends on panel width, profile and how visible the roof is.
Paint system. Finishes are not all the same. PVDF holds color and gloss substantially better under UV than the SMP polyester finishes used on budget panels. In a place with this much sun, that difference tends to show first on the south and west slopes. Ask which finish is quoted — it is one of the easiest places for a low bid to hide.
Slope. Slope decides the system before anything else does. Snap-lock panels need more pitch; mechanically seamed systems are generally the ones approved for low-slope work. There is no universal minimum — it is set by the specific panel’s approvals and by code — so anyone quoting a low-slope metal roof should be able to name the system and show that it is approved for that pitch.
What it costs, and what actually drives the price
Published national figures for standing seam commonly land somewhere between roughly $10 and $18 per square foot installed, and cost guides quote outside that in both directions. Those numbers are orientation, not a quote for your roof — anyone giving you a firm price over the phone without seeing the building is guessing.
What genuinely moves the number: roof complexity — hips, valleys, dormers and penetrations cost far more than the same area of simple gable, and complexity rather than square footage is usually the biggest single driver; panel length and access; substrate, gauge and finish; snap-lock versus mechanically seamed, since seaming is slower and needs equipment; decking condition, the most common source of surprise, which is why we check before quoting rather than after opening it up; and whether the job is a full tear-off or metal over an existing roof on battens, where the decking and local code decide whether that is even a candidate.

What to ask any contractor quoting standing seam
If a quote cannot answer these, it is not comparable to one that can — regardless of the number at the bottom.
- Which panel system and profile, by name? “Standing seam” is a category, not a specification.
- Snap-lock or mechanically seamed — and why that one for this roof?
- What gauge, what substrate, and which paint system: PVDF or SMP?
- What clip arrangement, and how is thermal movement handled on the longest run?
- What underlayment? A high-temperature product matters under metal in this climate.
- How are penetrations and wall abutments detailed — formed flashing, or sealant?
- What happens at the eave, rake and ridge? This is where wind failures start.
- Is the decking inspected before the price is fixed, and what happens if it is bad?
- What is the workmanship warranty in writing, and separately what does the material manufacturer offer?
When standing seam is the right call — and when it is not
Good fit: visible roofs where appearance matters; low-slope sections where exposed-fastener panels are not appropriate; buildings where you want to stop thinking about the roof for a long time; commercial and agricultural buildings with long, simple runs; and coastal-exposed properties where the specification is chosen properly.
Probably not: if you are selling in two years, the payback is not there. If the roof is a simple, steep, straightforward gable and budget is the deciding factor, architectural shingles are the honest answer. If it is an outbuilding or a barn where appearance does not matter, exposed-fastener panel does the same job for less. We would rather tell you that than sell you the more expensive roof.
How metal roofs actually fail
Almost never the panel. The recurring ones:
- Movement that was not allowed for — pinned panels, seams under stress, fasteners backing out of the deck.
- Penetration flashing — pipes, vents, skylights and curbs sealed with caulk where formed metal belongs. Sealant is a maintenance item; metal is a detail.
- Wall and chimney abutments — counter-flashing surface-sealed instead of let in.
- Edge detailing at eave, rake and ridge, where uplift concentrates.
- Dissimilar metals in contact — the wrong fastener or flashing against the panel sets up galvanic corrosion.
- Cut-edge corrosion on steel near salt — the coating stops at the cut; the exposure does not.
Manufactured and park-model roofs
A large part of what we do around the Valley is manufactured and park-model homes, and metal over these is not the same job as metal on a stick-built house. Fastener pattern, edge detail, the transition into existing skirting and the structure’s ability to carry the system all have to be handled differently. Ariston is licensed by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (licence MHDINS00004804) for manufactured-housing installation work.
Does a metal roof need underlayment? And is it noisy?
Underlayment: yes — it is part of the system, not an optional extra. In this climate a high-temperature-rated product is normally specified because of the surface temperatures metal reaches, though the actual requirement is set by the panel manufacturer’s instructions and by code. If a quote does not state the underlayment, ask.
Noise: not the way people expect. Over solid decking with underlayment, a metal roof is not meaningfully louder than shingles. The noise reputation comes from bare panels over open purlins on barns and workshops, which is a different construction entirely.
